Reading an adoption profile

What a profile can and cannot tell you, why unknown is an honest answer, and who decides.

Known, unknown and where it came from

A careful profile separates what someone observed from what nobody knows yet. Good with cats in a foster home is an observation. Unknown with children means nobody has seen it, not that it went badly. On WhiskerMatch each detail says where it came from: the foster, the staff, a vet visit, or a previous owner.

Profiles change

Animals settle in, recover, show new sides. A profile is the organization's best current picture, reviewed before it was published, and it can be updated. Ask when it was last checked.

Ask, then let them decide

Bring your questions about your home to the organization: other pets, children, stairs, hours alone. They know the animal and they make the adoption decision. An application is the start of a conversation, not a reservation.

General guidance, not veterinary or legal advice. Local rules and programs differ.

Check what stuck

1. A profile says unknown with dogs. What does that mean?
2. Who decides whether an adoption goes ahead?
3. A detail says reported by the previous owner. What should you take from that?
