The first day after a pet goes missing

The steps that help most in the first hours, from someone searching or someone who found an animal.

Search close and early

Most lost pets are found near home. Walk the area at quiet times, call softly, and check under porches, cars and sheds. Frightened animals often hide and stay silent.

Tell the people who can scan

If your pet is microchipped, call the chip registry to mark it lost and check your contact details. If you found an animal, any vet or shelter can scan for a chip for free.

Post a report, carefully

Share a recent photo, the general area and the date. Leave out your home address. Before handing over or collecting an animal, ask for proof: a photo with the pet, vet records, or a detail only the owner would know.

General guidance, not veterinary or legal advice. Local rules and programs differ.
