# Trap-neuter-return, step by step

What actually happens to a community cat in a TNR program, and why it goes back to the same place.

## Trap

Trained volunteers set humane box traps, usually by arrangement with whoever feeds the cats. Many groups hold back food for about a day beforehand so the cats will go into the traps. Traps are covered with a towel once a cat is inside, which keeps it calmer.

## Neuter

A veterinarian spays or neuters the cat under anesthesia, vaccinates it against rabies in most programs, and removes the tip of one ear so it can be recognized later from a distance. The cat recovers in its covered trap, usually overnight or a little longer.

## Return

The cat goes back to the place it was trapped. That is its territory: it knows the food, the shelter and the dangers there. Moving a cat somewhere new often fails, and an empty territory tends to fill with new, unsterilized cats.

## Where you come in

TNR is run by organizations and the caretakers who work with them. The most useful thing a neighbor can do is notice, note what they saw, and tell a group that works in the area. Setting traps on your own, without a plan for surgery and return, can leave a cat stuck in a trap with nowhere to go.

General guidance, not veterinary or legal advice. Local rules and programs differ.
