# You found an animal: the first hour

Safe first steps when a dog or cat that seems lost turns up, and how to get it home without handing it to the wrong person.

## Safety first, yours and the animal's

A frightened animal can bite, and one that is chased can run into traffic. If the animal is calm and comes to you, you can contain it somewhere quiet with water. If it is injured, aggressive or will not come, keep your distance and call your local animal control or shelter.

## Look for the quick way home

Check for a tag with a phone number. Any vet clinic or shelter can scan for a microchip, usually free. A chip only helps if someone scans it, so do this even if the animal looks well cared for.

## Tell the people who look

Owners search shelters first. Report the found animal to the local shelter or animal control; in many places the law asks you to. Then post a found report with a photo, the general area and the date.

## Keep one detail back

Leave one distinguishing detail out of your post, like a scar or a collar color. Ask anyone who calls to describe it, and ask for photos of them with the pet or vet records before you hand the animal over.

General guidance, not veterinary or legal advice. Local rules and programs differ.
